The Up/Down Ladder: How It Works

On each league day matches are typically divided into groups of 4 or 5 players. Occasionally there could be a group of 6. The players in each group are determined by who has opted in and their position on the ladder.  For example, if players 1 through 4 on the ladder opt in, they will be in Group 1. The other groups are determined the same way.

The only way you can move up the ladder is by winning matches in your group on league day. The two players in each group that win the most matches move up and the two players that lose the most matches in each group move down.

It's important to note that your movement is generally limited to moving up or down one group each week. For example, if everyone in the league played on league day #1, and they were all groups of 4, these would be the groupings for league day #2:

  • Group 1 – Winners from G1,  winners from G2

  • Group 2 – Losers from G1, winners fromG3

  • Group 3 – Losers from G2, winners from G4, and so on...

One of the easiest ways to actually see this is to go to  pickleballbrackets.com and click on one of our leagues. Look at the second to last column in the standings, 'Game Day Place.' There you will see the results of the various groups and how they moved in the most recent game day.

Additional Factors

If there are ties on league day, they are broken in this order:

  • Head to Head.

  • Total points earned minus total points against.

  • The higher seed at the beginning of the matches on league day will get the higher placement.

If it's a 5 or 6 player  group, the player(s) in the middle stay where they are. If you miss a week, you will go down two spots on the ladder.  In other words, if you are currently 12th on the ladder and you miss a week, you will move to 14th.

Up/Down in its most simplistic form is the two people who win the most matches on their court on league day will move up the ladder.   The two who lose the most will move down.
